Program
Vince Jones with the Monash Sinfonia
2pm | Alexander Theatre
For the special opening concert of Big Jazz Day Out, Australian jazz icon Vince Jones joins Paul Grabowsky AO and the 20-piece Monash Sinfonia for a cinematic re-imaging of his celebrated compositions and favourites from his vast repertoire. Renowned for his soulful voice and lyrical trumpet playing, Jones brings his signature warmth, wisdom and understated virtuosity, while Grabowsky’s distinctive piano artistry and eight-time ARIA Award-winning legacy create a collaboration of extraordinary musical chemistry.
Mildlife
8:30pm | Alexander Theatre
Renowned for their ecstatic, free-flowing performances, Mildlife have lit up stages at Glastonbury, Primavera Sound, Montreux Jazz Festival, Love Supreme and beyond, transporting audiences through a kaleidoscopic journey of ’70s psychedelia, cosmic disco and deep-space jazz. Don’t miss their Monash debut at Big Jazz Day Out — an immersive celebration of rhythm, colour and connection.
The Cloud Maker
3:15pm | The David Li Sound Gallery
Winners of the APRA AMCOS Art Music Award for Performance of the Year, The Cloud Maker creates immersive, ever-changing sonic experiences. Their music celebrates goddesses from each of the five female master musicians’ cultures, channelling ancient tales of fierce battles, shamanic dances, journeys to the afterlife and a moth goddess singing the most beautiful song of all time.
Mindy Meng Wang & Paul Grabowsky
7:15pm | The David Li Sound Gallery
Experience a genre-defying collaboration between two of Australia’s most visionary musicians. Acclaimed guzheng virtuoso Mindy Meng Wang joins pianist, composer and cultural icon Paul Grabowsky AO to perform music from Between Dreams in the acoustically superb David Li Sound Gallery. This intimate setting invites audiences into a hypnotic space between tradition and invention.
Mama Alto
5:30pm | The David Li Sound Gallery
Mama Alto, a jazz singer, cabaret artiste and gender-transcendent diva captivates audiences with her spellbinding interpretations of the Billie Holiday songbook. Her impressive collaborations span legendary figures such as Finucane & Smith, Maude Davey OAM and Brook Andrew, and she has shared the stage with luminaries including Taylor Mac and Alan Cumming.
Cookin’ On 3 Burners with Special Guests
9:30pm & 10:45pm | The Count’s
Cookin’ On 3 Burners are Australia’s hardest-hitting Hammond organ trio, delivering deep funk, raw soul, organ jazz and boogaloo with grit, groove and undeniable flair. Across two high-energy sets, they’ll open with classic soul-jazz grooves from legends like Brother Jack McDuff and Jimmy Smith before launching into tracks from their ninth studio album, Cookin’ the Books, a bold, analog-heavy, groove-laden collection featuring guest appearances and lush string arrangements. Finish your Big Jazz Day Out with a Cookin’ on 3 Burners party, served soul-jazz style.
The Shuffle Club featuring Rebecca Barnard
7:30pm & 8:45pm | The Count’s Courtyard Bandwagon Stage
The Shuffle Club bring their high-octane blend of jazz, swing, blues and boogie to Big Jazz Day Out, joined by Australia’s beloved singer-songwriter Rebecca Barnard. Expect swinging standards, classic blues and original compositions delivered with raw energy, warmth, soul and storytelling — music that will get you moving from the first note to the last.
Mordialloc Jazz Orchestra – Jazzeoke
3pm | The Count’s
Back by popular demand, Jazzeoke returns to Big Jazz Day Out after a sell-out show at The Counts in 2025, and a hit appearance at last year’s festival. Step up to the mic and sing with a full jazz orchestra or simply watch and enjoy the big band energy. Solo or duet, experienced or first-time performers, everyone is welcome for an afternoon of music, laughter and fun.
Dany Maia with the Monash Brazilian Ensemble
4pm | The Count’s Courtyard Bandwagon Stage
Hailing from Bahia, Brazil, Dany Maia is a singer, dancer and powerhouse of Brazilian rhythms, bringing the heat, soul and joy of her homeland to every stage. For this special Big Jazz Day Out performance, she’ll be joined by students from the Sir Zelman Cowen School of Music Brazilian Ensemble, blending authentic Brazilian grooves with the energy and creativity of Melbourne’s next generation of musicians.
Aaron Choulai & Roman MC with the Monash Art Ensemble
"To Kill A Magic We Got Used To"
9:30pm | David Li Sound Gallery
Spoken word meets the avant-garde in a daring new work that reimagines Stravinsky’s L'Histoire du soldat for a digital age. A new work by Artistic Director and composer Aaron Choulai and rapper Roman MC, To Kill A Magic We Got Used To follows a modern artist trading authenticity for social media fame. Experience this genre-defying performance by the Monash Art Ensemble – building the story live by utilising Choulai’s unique conducting system. Stravinsky’s music is abstracted into a blend of composition and improvisation around Roman MC’s narrative-led spoken word and freestyle. This gripping work confronts the cost of visibility and the fragile balance between creative ambition and artistic integrity.
Yunior Terry & Vashti Sivell with the Monash Latin Ensemble
5pm | The Count’s
Regarded as one of New York City’s most sought-after bass players, Yunior Terry is recognised for his big sound, versatility and contagious rhythm. As the youngest son of Cuba’s renowned musical family Los Terry’s, Yunior began his musical training at age seven and graduated from Havana’s National School of Art with a double major in violin and bass. He has since toured internationally with Jerry Gonzalez, Eddie Palmieri, Gonzalo Rubalcaba, Ravi Coltrane and The Latin Jazz All Stars.
The Syncopators with Michelle Nicolle
6:45pm & 8pm | The Count’s
Originally formed in 1984 by trombonist Chris Ludowyk this iconic ensemble has earned its place as one of Australia’s premier classic and mainstream jazz groups and arguably among the best in the world. Known for their dazzling versatility The Syncopators effortlessly blend New Orleans roots swing and pre-rock rhythm & blues with the sweet vocal harmonies of the Mills Brothers and Boswell Sisters. Each member is a multi-instrumental powerhouse delivering dynamic performances filled with energy, humour and sheer musical brilliance. Joining them for this special performance is acclaimed vocalist Michelle Nicolle.
