Affinity Quartet in concert
The Ian Potter Centre for Performing Arts
$20 - $45
Celebrated worldwide for their potent and energised playing, the multi-award winning Affinity Quartet perform as part of MPAC’s Sound Gallery Series.
Recognised as one of Australia’s most exciting ensembles, Affinity Quartet has built an impressive international profile with appearances at major festivals including Germany’s Rheingau Musik Festival and Finland’s Kuhmo Chamber Music Festival. They also represented Australian chamber music on the world stage at Expo 2025 in Osaka, Japan.
Their artistry has drawn high praise from critics and peers alike: ‘captivating playing’ (Süddeutsche Zeitung), ‘flawless ensemble’ (Limelight Magazine), ‘highly committed’ (The Age) and ‘first-class string playing’ (Classic Melbourne). David Harrington, founder of the legendary Kronos Quartet (USA), recently remarked: ‘It’s time the world gets shaken awake and Affinity can do it!’.
Since forming in 2015, the Quartet has cultivated imaginative approaches to the string quartet repertoire while championing new works by Australian composers. Over the past decade, they have studied with luminaries including Alban Berg Quartet founder Günter Pichler at the International Institute of Chamber Music, Madrid; Valentin Erben (Alban Berg Quartet) and Mathieu Herzog (Ébène Quartet) at the McGill International String Quartet Academy, Montreal; Joel Krosnick (Juilliard Quartet) at the Amsterdam String Quartet Biennale Young Talents Residency; and composer Thomas Adès at the International Musicians Seminar, Prussia Cove, UK.
Don’t miss these brilliant artists as they perform string quartets by Shostakovich and Beethoven, along with a work composed especially for Affinity Quartet by award-winning Australian composer Alice Chance.
